I got a call the other day.  The man told me he had heard our radio ads and liked them.  He wanted to know if there was a link to the ads on our website. He wanted to have his wife listen to them so she could get a better understanding of what we are all about and our approach to fitness at our Austin personal training facility.  The ads tell our clients' success stories.  Below are two of those ads:

What Clients are Saying #16

"I started working out at Kelly Personal Training in October 2007 and hardly ever miss a week. I was able to keep it going because their method - one intense half-hour of exercise per week - is just so easy to integrate into your life, plus it’s so affordable. You might not think you would see results from just 30 minutes a week but I experienced a greater increase in strength in the first year than from any workout style I had ever done.

The method itself is effective, but it's the trainers that really make the difference. I worked with Amy Hard and I couldn't have asked for better. Amy guided my workout from start to finish. She kept track of all of the details, and paid attention to all movements, thus knowing when she could push me and when I was at my limit. Personal training is tricky because different people like different forms of motivation. Amy paid attention to what worked best for me, keeping me right up to my most productive zone.

The intensity of the workout is enough to where my mind would go completely blank of extraneous thought. I was fully focused on the task at hand. And the clarity stays with you. This workout is not just a body thing. After each session, I always felt better on all levels. I highly recommend Kelly Personal Training and especially Amy. Give it a try!"

At Austin Strength Training and at New Orleans Strength Training the goal of our personal trainers is the give the client a workout they could not get on their own. Without guidance, most people will exercise to a level below their optimal capability. A good trainer like Amy will safely guide the client to the next level, the level where ongoing improvement occurs.

A year after hitting bottom

The persistent aches and pains from old injuries were my excuse for not exercising. Not exercising led to more aches and pains, less activity, weight gain, and weakness. In a weakened state illnesses are likely to be more frequent and protracted. I got pneumonia and bronchitis, and my asthma flared up. My blood oxygen absorption rate fell to the low 80s. My heart had to work harder to get the oxygen I needed. As a result my blood pressure rose, and my resting pulse was twenty beats per minute higher. I was listless and constantly tired. My cardiologist was concerned that I may have had a silent heart attack, so he conducted a series of tests.  I passed.

That was almost a year ago, the bottom of a negative cycle. They say you have got to hit rock bottom before you commit to making a change. Since that time I have changed my eating habits. I have not missed a strength training session regardless of the aches and pains. Funny thing is, the exercise made the aches and pains go away. Pain-free, I was able to add other activities. I began biking a couple times a week. Results: Thirty-seven pounds lighter, greatly reduced blood pressure, blood oxygen absorption level in the high 90s, pulse more than 20 beats per minute slower, and no aches or pains.

Recently I went riding bikes with my tireless daughter. We spent 3 1/2 hours riding bikes one day and an hour and 45 minutes the next day through the hills of Austin where deer abound. That would have been unthinkable a year ago. As reassuring at the positive numbers have been what is most gratifying is to be able to do things you have not done in years with greater ease and to be able to get out of bed the next day and do it again - a positive cycle. This positive cycle begins with increasing one's strength.

At Austin Fitness Training and New Orleans Fitness Training we use MedX medical rehab equipment that is better tolerated by those with pain and joint problems. Our personal trainers can set up a program that will increase your strength and enduranceeliminate pain, and dramaticallyincrease your quality of life.

My pain is gone

Imagine living with pain every day.  You are getting older and your life has become compromised. The prospect that the pain will always be there presents a bleak picture.  It does not have to be that way.

At both our locations, Austin Personal Trainers and at New Orleans Personal Trainers, our trainers use MedX rehabilitative exercise equipment.  It is used by elite athletes as well as those recovering from injuries.

Gretchen, one of our trainers, trains Larry. Larry is recovering from injuries sustained as a result of a motorcycle accident.  Prior to beginning exercise he lived in pain every day.

A quote from Larry:

“Prior to starting at Kelly Personal Training  I was taking at between 4 and 8 ibuprofens a day just so my knees, back, and shoulder weren’t hurting. I was icing my back a couple times a week. Now I don't need anything for pain because the pain is gone. My work requires me to walk around in attics. I can tell my balance has improved as well. The slight discomfort during the workout is well worth the benefits. I have lost 32 pounds too.”

Our equipment is better tolerated by those who have physical limitations, and workout itself will alleviate pain.  Many live in a state of chronic pain.Years ago I was one of them for almost three years. With the right exercise that can change dramatically.

Going from five diabetes shots a day down to one

From this article, Even Short Bursts Of Exercise Can Reverse Heart Problems In People With Type 2 Diabetes, come these quotes:

“In a new study published in Diabetologia, researchers examined the effect of brief, high-intensity workouts on type 2 diabetes patients who had already experienced heart abnormalities due to the disease. They found that these short bursts of exercise had a positive impact on the patients, improving their heart structure and offering some of the best protection for diabetes control.”

"The researchers measured cardiac structure and function with MRIs, and they found that these high-intensity, intermittent workouts greatly improved heart structure and function."

At Austin Personal Training and New Orleans Personal Training for our strength training sessions we use a high intensity intermittent training (HIIT) protocol, and we do sprint training on our aerobic equipment. The best part of these workouts is that they do not take very long, but they are highly effective.  One of our clients, Leif, a former heart surgery patient, went from five shots a day down to one.  See his testimonial in the second part of this short video.

Why they stay

It helps to have good trainers. In a recent blog post it was estimated that between our two Kelly Personal Training facilities, Austin Fitness Trainingand at New Orleans Personal Training, we had surpassed a quarter million training sessions. In another reoccurring blog post titled What Clients Are Saying we highlight the progress that our clients have made. Trainers made that happen.

The fitness business is a revolving door for trainers and clients as well. Only the good trainers manage keep a longstanding clientele and make a permanent go of it in the fitness industry.

We are fortunate to have so many exceptional trainers with many years of experience.  One of those trainers is Harmon Dash. He is dedicated, knowledgeable, and professional, and he is loved by his clients. He reflects positively on our entire enterprise, and we are grateful to have him. The job is fun and rewarding when you help people change their lives. Below are three testimonials of three of those people whose lives Harmon helped change:

"I’ve found the fountain of youth, and it’s at Kelly Personal Training! I’m 79 years old, and haven’t felt this good in decades. Most exciting is my new found ability to keep up with the physical demands of having fun with my grandson. Thanks to my trainer, Harmon Dash, for making me look and feel better, AND for improving my quality of life."

Stuart Phillips, retired orthopedic surgeon (Age 79)

"After working with Harmon for only five weeks, I improved my military reserve fitness scores by two levels, achieving one of my best scores ever at age 50. I knew then, this was an exercise routine I could commit to, long term. It's been 5 years now, and the workout I get at Kelly Personal Training still bests any other exercise program out there, both in terms of efficiency and results.

Plus, the mental discipline that comes with continued visits carries over to day to day life. Anyone who has not experienced the results they wanted from a gym membership or home training owes it to themselves to give Kelly Personal Training a try. You won’t regret it."

David Savoie, CPA (Age 55) CPO, U.S. Navy Reserve

"I used to work out 3 times a week: it dominated my schedule, but wasn't giving me the results I desired. Since coming to see Harmon, once a week at Kelly Personal Training, I've seen dramatic improvements in strength and energy, but now I have time to be with my family. Plus, my workouts have triggered better eating habits, deeper sleep and an overall feeling of well-being."

Getting your life back

Chiseled rock-hard abs, a powerful svelte body, an easy athletic grace, and a head-turning physical presence - if you got it you got it if you don’t there are things you can do to work in that direction, but there is no guarantee you will get there.  The combination of uncompromising hard work, dietary discipline, and most importantly having the right parents (genetics) are essential.  As appealing as the above sounds I have come to the conclusion that there are far more important benefits that proper exercise brings.

A new client walked up to me this week and said, “I want to thank you for saving my husband's life”. Her husband trains with John, one of our trainers. She told me that her husband had cancer twice in the last year, and unfortunately both times the doctors overmedicated him with chemo and radiation. He almost died. In her words, “He looked like a concentration camp survivor”. He has recovered, and he is much stronger.  He has his life back. Carol used to live with pain every day.  She reports that she hasadded years to her working life.  Debra increased her bone density by a standard deviation. Mark lived with constant neck pain  - no more.  Leif was once a physical mess - heart surgery and five insulin shots a day.  He has since lost 50 pounds, is down to one insulin shot a day, and does things physically eight years later that were out of the question before. Steve worked long hours, and it was physically taking its toll.  He now has thevitality he never had before.

These are just some of the stories, there are many more here. We work with people every day who have dramatically improved the quality of their lives.  Yes, they look better and that is a plus; better yet is to be alive and do things you thought you would not be able to able at your age, do it well, and without pain.  You can’t put a price on that.

These changes do not require endless hours if exercise. Our fitness trainers at Austin TX Personal Training and at New Orleans Personal Trainers can guide you through an effective high intensity strength training program that will take less than an hour a week.  We can help you transform your life.

Increasing bone density at age 60

Recently one of our clients brought in a cookie cake in gratitude for John Shafer, one of our trainers, and a card shown here that says it all.  It is results like these that really make our work rewarding. Debra was more than two standard deviations of away from the ideal bone density of a 25 year old.  In the time she began training her bone density went from being more than two standard deviations away from ideal to slightly more than one standard deviation away from ideal. While she still slightly in osteopenia, she is going against the trend of decreasing bone density that is common for people her age.

Debra will be 60 soon.  Her regimen: she takes calcium supplements and vitamin D3, strength trains one a week for 30 minutes, and walks daily. She has lost 20 pounds.

Our bones adapt to physical stress and are constantly remodeling themselves. If you expose the body and the bones to weight-bearing exercise the body and bones will adapt and become stronger.

A little strength training, an active lifestyle, and better eating choices can have profound effects on one's fitness and health. These changes do not require endless hours in the weight room. Our fitness trainers at New Orleans Personal Trainers and at Austin TX Personal Training can guide you through an effective strength training program that will take less than an hour a week and achieve life-changing results.

A Quarter Million Training Sessions

Some years back I was having a conversation with a fellow gym owner from another city. He wanted to know how many clients came through our doors. I told him we conduct a bit more than 500 personal training sessions a week. He responded, "You mean 500 clients a month". I said, "No, we do 500 clients a week". We had one location at the time. We have two locations now and a loyal clientele. Doing a rough estimate of just about how many clients have worked out over the years, it comes out that by a conservative estimate we've done over a quarter of million training sessions since we first opened our doors. The reason people patronize any business is because of the value that is offered. That quarter million is a vote of confidence and a validation of what we are doing. The average stay with a personal trainer is less than six months. The average stay at our facilities is measured in years - another validation. We love the work we do and the clients we work with. We truly appreciate the loyalty of our clients and understand that without our client's support and patronage we would've closed our doors at  Austin Fitness Training and at New Orleans Personal Training. a long time ago.

Extraordinary Clients

The Olympics are just around the corner. It got me to thinking. Not everyone can be the best in the world, but they can do some surprising things. Some of our clients from our New Orleans and Austin locations:

Helen (New Orleans) 74 had both knees, both hips, and a partial shoulder replaced. She was a very active tennis player when she was younger. Strength training was the one form of exercise she enjoyed doing at 74.

Darcy (New Orleans) was given the green light to work out during her entire pregnancy. She really did. She worked out on a Thursday and had her baby the following Monday.

Sylvia (Austin) worked out with us until she past at the age of 95.

Laurence (New Orleans) finished well in the NYC Triathlon. He then started strength training with us. Three years later, he returned the NYC Triathlon and finished first in his age group by more than five minutes. He was the oldest in the age group 46- 50. He finished 24th overall.

Jack (New Orleans)75 had both knees replaced and continued to exercise. Four months after the second replacement he was able to get in and out of a bass boat unaided. He law partner five years his junior had the same procedure at the same time and was still using a walker to get around.

Tom (Austin) had a total shoulder replacement and was told that the most he could hope for was that he would be able to raise his arm to a horizontal position. After a year, he could lift his arm fully vertical over his head.

Debbie (New Orleans) had survived cancer and wanted to get stronger. I told her the workout might be difficult. She told me, "I survived cancer, I can do this". She did. She got cancer a second time and then Lupus, She survived both and continued to exercise.

Claire (New Oleans) worked out during her pregnancy. She reported that the deliver was easier than the previous one and within five weeks of delivery she was back to a size zero.

Carol (Austin) was diagnosed with oesteopenia at age 43. She has since increased her bone density to be osteopenia-free at age 66.

A dad (New Oleans) called me from the stadium In Baton Rouge after his son’s team had won the state championship in soccer. He said he wanted to thank me for helping turning his son into a man. I told him I had nothing to do with it. It would have happened anyway. The kid went on to be first in his class in college. I was fortunate to have such a client.

Leif (Austin) went from five insulin shots a day to one a week and lost 60 pounds.

JD (Austin) was a one of the first pilots to fly into Paris during the Liberation in WW2. In his late 80's he got inoperable cancer and was told he had six months to live. He continued to exercise for the next year and a half.

Some clients may not be a part of board sweep of history or have compelling physical stories. They are friends, often mentors to us, and no less important. We learn from all of them and look forward to seeing them each week. We are truly blessed to be in this business.

Strength training, compounding the benefits

Strength training enables you to engage in other activities more often and longer than had you not strength trained. You'll to enjoy life more and play longer and more often. Additonally, You will suffer less injuries. Engaging in activities longer and more often compounds the benefits derived from strength training creating a virtuous cycle.

Examples:

Carole lived with constant back pain. Her back pain disappeared shortly after she began strength training. Three years later she was still going strong attending dance classes with people half her age. The additional activity of dance classes contributed positively to her health as well.

Before strength training Marcus played golfed nine holes of golf every other day. He could not play on successive days as he was too drained of energy. He began strength training once a week. A year later he was playing 18 holes of golf and then 18 holes the next day. Those 27 additional holes redound positively to his health.

These changes do not require endless hours in the gym. Our personal trainers at New Orleans Personal Trainers and at Austin TX Personal Training and can guide you through an effective high intensity strength training program that will take less than an hour a week. Improve a little each week, go out and do the things you enjoy, and over time your life will change significantly.

More results in eight weeks than I had in three years

Number sixteen in a series about what clients have to say about their workouts.

Barbi was an avid runner. She began strength training eight weeks ago. Barbi had this to say, “I have had more results in eight weeks than in three years working out with another trainer”.

With strength training in order to produce a change the body has to perform more work than it is used to handling. Then, given adequate time to recover and adequate nutrition, the body adapts as a form of self-protection by becoming stronger.

In Barbi’s case, she was happy with her change in appearance. Besides appearance there is a long list of positive changes that can take place. Clients will also see a change in their performance and a change in the overall feeling of well being.

For those who are extremely out of shape it will not take much to perform work that is beyond what the body is used to handling – even workloads of modest intensity will produce change. Our oldest client is 92, and she improves regularly. We move the bar a little higher each time – additional repetitions or additional weight. For those who are in great shape the bar is already high. To improve they will have to move the bar even higher.

These changes do not require endless hours in the weight room. Our fitness trainers at Austin TX Personal Training and at New Orleans Personal Trainers can guide you through an effective high intensity strength training program that will take less than an hour a week.

What clients are saying

Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness. Edward Stanley (1873)

Two people who have decided not to give in to the infirmities of age:

“A year ago at this time I was experiencing frequent bouts of aches and pains in my neck, shoulders, and back. I figured it was just part of growing older. Since I started strength training last January, these problems have gone away. Amazing!” - Bill Milliken

“After only five weeks on the program, I improved my military reserve fitness scores by two levels, achieving one of my best scores ever at age 50. I’m making gains in muscular development faster than any other program I have tried over the years. The mental discipline of this program carries over to day to day life. Anyone who has not experienced the results they wanted from a gym membership or home training owes it to themselves to give this method a try. You won’t regret it.” - David Savoie, CPA

Bill trains at Austin TX Personal Training, and David trains at New Orleans Personal Trainers.

It does not take much time. Your investment in time spent exercising will far exceed the costs associated with not exercising – injury, illness or declining abilities. Our program is one that people can stick to for life - a life where one feels better, looks better, is free to enjoy life more without endless hours in the gym.

A little strength training, an active lifestyle, and better eating choices can have profound effects on one's fitness and health. These changes do not require endless hours in the weight room. Living with pain or living without it

“ A year ago at this time I was experiencing frequent bouts of aches and pains in my neck, shoulders, and back. I figured it was just part of growing older. Since I started strength training last January, these problems have gone away. Amazing!”

This was the experience of Bill Milliken who trains with Timothy, one of our Austin Personal trainers. Carole had a similar experience: “I woke up every day with back pain. Going up and down stairs was painful for me knees. I am now pain-free”.

There are many changes that come from exercise - increases in strength, speed, stamina, body leanness, and flexibility – that can be measured. Changes that cannot be accurately measured include how well you feel and the decreased likelihood of injury and the attendant pain. The right exercise can result in an increase in one’s quality of life. In some cases it can be dramatically life changing. As trainers this is the most rewarding result we experience with clients.

Exercise can go a long way in relieving pain and decreasing the likelihood of injury if it is the right exercise and the right amount of exercise. At Austin Personal Trainers and New Orleans Personal Trainers we use MedX rehabilitative exercise equipment that is easier on the joints and can be adjusted to accommodate those with limitations. We also use exercise protocols that were derived from exercise studies and have been proven effective for all ages and levels of fitness. We also have many years of experience working with those with pain, so that they can avoid the trial and error and the possibility of additional injury that can result by doing it on their own.

What clients are saying

The compound benefits of strength training

There is a long list of positive benefits that result from proper strength training. One of the benefits is that it enables you to engage in other activities longer and more often than had you not strength trained. This benefit enables you to enjoy life more. One client reported that she was able to play with her grandchildren for three hours crawling around on the floor. Before she strength training she could not last that long.

Engaging in activities longer and more often can compound the benefits derived from strength training - kind of like compound interest. Examples:

Before strength training Marcus played golfed nine holes of golf every other day. He could not play on successive days as he was too drained of energy. He began strength training once a week. A year later he was play 18 holes of golf and then 18 holes the next day. Those 27 additional holes redound positively to his health.

What clients are saying, "I love this workout"

Number fifteen in a series about what clients have to say about their workouts.

Kathy is one of Timothy’s clients. Timothy is a trainer at Kelly Personal Training. Kathy is able to work out in spite of significant ailments. She had this to say about her training, “I love this workout. My daughter can’t believe that I am still with. On my most recent visit to the doctor my doctor was pleased - my blood pressure and my pulse is lower”.

Another client of Timothy’s also named Kathy (83 years old) had this to say,“I can do yard work for two and half hours now and not be exhausted”.

Regardless of condition or age one can get stronger. When one is stronger they improve their quality of life. As you become stronger you will find you will be able to engage in more activities, and this will further enhance your health. It all starts with strength. Just improve a little each week and over time you will feel years younger. High intensity interval training can be done by people of any age, and it is the type of personal training we do atPersonal Training Austin and at New Orleans Personal Training.

What clients are saying: “I have officially lost 50 pounds"

Number thirteen in a series about what clients have to say about their workouts.

A recent conversation with one of our clients: Leif said, “I have officially lost 50 pounds. It has taken three years. Three years ago I was eating a whole bag of Cheetos in one sitting, and that is not good for someone who is taking shots for diabetes. I am so happy I heard your commercial three years ago”.

I said, “You know these last three years could have been different. Instead of losing weight you could have continued gaining weight.

He replied, “Something clicked and I knew this is something that I needed to do”.

People are in a hurry. They crash diet only to gain it back quicker. Leif's loss of 50 pounds was slow in coming, but he is much more likely to keep it off going forward. Ninety-five percent of those who lose significant amounts of weight gain it all back and more within five years. Why bother if you are not going to reap long lasting life-sustaining benefits?

The average renewal rate for most health clubs is around 30 percent. Of those who rejoin only about 30 percent of them use the club regularly. Those are not encouraging stats. People start out with good intentions and fall by the wayside when the results are not immediate. Where are you going to be health-and-fitness-wise three years from now? Most people make the choice to do nothing and at some point find themselves very out of shape. It is a common refrain we hear from new clients. - “I was exercising regularly until about two years ago.” “I have not exercises since 2001.”

At Austin Personal Trainers and New Orleans Personal Trainers we offer high intensity training (HIT). It is a full body workout. It takes about 30 minutes, and you do it once or twice a week. This is a workout that you slowly build up to, but it is doable at 30 minutes once a week. All you have to do is to keep improving, make modest changes in eating habits, and you will get to where you need to be. The other days of the week you are free to engage in activities you enjoy; there are not hours of drudgery in the gym. This is a workout plan most people can stick to for the long haul.

What clients are saying: “Under no circumstances stop exercising because that is what is keeping you going”

Number twelve in a series about what clients have to say about their workouts.

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a rare condition that causes symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease. It is a neurodegenerative disease marked by a combination of symptoms affecting movement, blood pressure, and other body functions; hence the label "multiple system" atrophy. The cause of MSA is unknown. Almost 80% of patients are disabled within 5 years of onset of the motor symptoms.

One of our clients, Christine, was diagnosed at Mayo with MSA 3 yrs ago. Of all the patients monitored at Mayo Christine she has experienced the least amount of atrophy. Christine works out with Adam at our New Orleans location. She had this to say about her workouts:

I was diagnosed with MSA 3 years ago I went for two other opinions in Houston and the Mayo in Rochester and they confirmed the diagnosis. I immediately started the strength training with Adam, and I am still going. The last time I went to the Mayo in October 2009 and Dr. Feeley who is my neurologist said “under no circumstances stop exercising because that is what is keeping you going”. Adam has done a tremendous job with me.

A person with a stronger body can better withstand ailments one will inevitably confront. We are convinced that strength training is essential for a higher quality of life. It is our good fortune to be able to play a small part in helping people make positive changes in their lives, and we appreciate their kind words. Seeing clients make positive changes is what makes our jobs worthwhile.

Adams has been a trainer for 15 years. We feel that we have a deep bench of fitness professionals. Adam, a valued member of our team, is ready to help you improve the quality of your life.
